What Happens During a Facial? A Complete Treatment Guide From Our Spa

Booked your first facial with us and not totally sure what you're walking into? Fair enough. A lot of clients picture a vague hour of relaxation without much idea what our estheticians are actually doing to their skin or why.

Here's the sequence we follow, step by step, and what each part is doing for you.

What Happens During a Facial at Our Spa?

We run every facial through the same core sequence: cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, extractions (if needed), massage, a mask matched to your skin, and then sunscreen. We adjust the details around what your skin needs that day, not a fixed script, so your session and your friend's session with us can look pretty different even on the same day.

Order matters here. Cleanse after exfoliating instead of before, and we've undone half the point of the treatment. That's why we don't skip professional facial steps, even when a client's short on time.

Step 1: Double Cleansing

We start here for a reason. Skip this step, and every step after it is just working through a layer of makeup, sunscreen, and city grime instead of your actual skin.

Our estheticians use an oil-based cleanser first to break down makeup and SPF, then a water-based one to clear sweat and residue. Two passes, not one.

Step 2: Skin Analysis

Easy to forget this is even a step, but it's the one that shapes everything we do next. We check your skin under bright light, sometimes magnified, for congestion, dryness, sensitivity, or active breakouts before deciding how the rest of your session goes.

This is where we'll ask about your routine, any activities, allergies, and recent sun exposure. Tell us the truth here. It changes what we put on your face in the next twenty minutes.

Step 3: Exfoliation

This lifts off dead skin cells sitting on the surface, so whatever we apply next actually absorbs instead of sitting on top of skin that's already dead.

Depending on what your skin can handle that day, we might use a physical scrub, a chemical exfoliant like an enzyme or a mild acid, or light microdermabrasion. If you're sensitive or actively breaking out, we go gentler.

Step 4: Steam

Warm steam opens up your pores and softens whatever's built up inside them, which makes extractions, the next step, a lot less uncomfortable than doing it on dry, closed pores.

We run the steam for about five to ten minutes. Most clients tell us this is the part they remember most; it just feels good.

Step 5: Extractions (If Needed)

We don't include this in every facial, on purpose. Extractions mean manually clearing blackheads and clogged pores, and we only do this where your skin is genuinely congested, not as a default we run through regardless of what your skin needs.

Done right, you shouldn't leave our spa bruised or raw. If your skin's reactive, or you mentioned active breakouts during your consultation, we may skip this step for you entirely.

Step 6: Massage

Yes, this is the relaxing part, but it's doing real work too. Massage boosts blood flow to your skin, which helps our products absorb better and gives you that immediate glow clients notice on the way out.

Some of our estheticians work by hand; others bring in gua sha or jade tools, depending on the treatment you've booked.

Step 7: Mask

Whatever we flagged during your skin analysis decides your mask: hydrating for dry or dehydrated skin, clay-based for oily or congested skin, calming for anything irritated.

This is your ten-to-fifteen-minute window to just lie back while it sits.

Step 8: Toner, Serum, Moisturizer, SPF

Our last layer matters more than most clients think. Toner rebalances your skin's pH, serum targets your specific concern, moisturizer seals in hydration, and sunscreen protects skin that's just been exfoliated and is now more sun-sensitive than usual.

We never skip SPF at the end of a facial, and we'd rather you didn't either once you leave. Freshly treated skin burns faster.

First Facial: What to Expect

Before anything touches your face, we'll sit down for a short consultation. We need to know your skin type, allergies, and current actives before choosing products for you.

Some redness afterward is normal, especially if we did extractions. It usually settles within a few hours. Mild sensitivity the next day is normal too, though sharp pain or lasting irritation isn't, and we'd want to hear about that if it happens.

Most first-time clients tell us they're surprised by how relaxing the whole thing is. The steam and massage tend to catch people off guard.

Deep Cleansing Facial vs. Our Standard Facial: What's the Difference?

Our deep cleansing facial follows the same facial treatment steps, but we push further on extraction and exfoliation. It's built for congested, oily, or acne-prone skin, not general upkeep.

Our standard facial is lighter, with more hydration and relaxation and less extraction work. If your skin's already clear and you just want a refresh, standard usually does the job. If you're dealing with regular breakouts or clogged pores, ask us for the deep cleansing option specifically.

How Often Should You Book a Facial With Us?

Every four to six weeks lines up with your skin's natural renewal cycle. We can space sessions closer together for active acne, but only under our guidance; treating skin that isn't actually congested tends to cause irritation rather than fix anything.

Final Thoughts

A facial with us is relaxing, sure, but it's not just that. Cleansing, analysis, exfoliation, steam, extractions, massage, mask, and protection: each step we take is doing a specific job, and the order matters as much as the products we use.

Knowing what we do and why before you sit in our chair makes the whole thing less of a mystery. You'll know what to ask us for, what to expect, and what your skin needs the next time you book.

FAQ

What happens during a facial appointment at your spa?
We move through cleansing, skin analysis, exfoliation, steam, extractions where needed, massage, a mask matched to your skin, and then finishing products including SPF.

Is a deep cleansing facial painful?
Extractions can feel uncomfortable on congested skin, but done properly, you shouldn't leave our spa in pain or visibly bruised.

How long does a facial with you take?
Usually 45 minutes to an hour. Our deep cleansing facial or add-ons can run longer.

What should I avoid before my first facial with you?
Skip waxing, heavy sun exposure, or starting new actives like retinol in the days beforehand. Your skin will already be more reactive once you're in our chair.

Can I wear makeup right after my facial?
Give it a few hours. Freshly cleaned, exfoliated skin needs time to actually absorb what we just applied.
